How neuromodulation and neurofeedback work

01

Free consultation

The first step is to book a free 25-minute consultation where you can tell us about your goals and what you want to accomplish from working with us. We will tell you more about the process and answer any questions you have. If you're interested, you can then book an assessment and training.

Client intake and lifestyle assessment

Once you decide to embark on this journey, we'll spend a longer session with you to go through a detailed intake and lifestyle assessment. This includes a series of questions about your background, daily routines, habits, and behaviors.

It goes beyond just cognitive aspects, exploring your physical health, sleep quality, eating habits, exercise routine, stress levels, and social interactions. We'll also ask you to share your main concerns and the objectives you aim to achieve.

Quantitative EEG (QEEG)

We'll begin the assessment with a resting-state EEG recording, which will be analyzed and quantified to produce the QEEG. An electrode cap will be placed on your head, and you will sit quietly with eyes open and closed as we record your brain's electrical activity.

This will provide us a baseline picture of your thinking patterns. We use a 37-channel electrode cap for the most comprehensive results.

Event related potentials (ERP)

Next, we'll record your brain activity while performing a simple interactive pattern matching task. This will complement the resting state baseline with information about how your brain performs in the real world, responding to events that come up throughout your day.

This is very helpful, as there are more studies available on ERP than QEEG. Combined, these two measures give us a good picture of your default thinking patterns, and can reveal targets for training that may be at the root of your symptoms.

General cognitive assessment

Finally, as part of the intake process, you will perform a general cognitive assessment. This is a series of interactive games that measure your performance in concentration, memory, reasoning, planning, and coordination.

The results are compared to peers of similar age and gender. This complements the QEEG and ERP, and as you go through the training, repeated testing will demonstrate your improvements.

Report and training plan

Once all of the data is collected, we will prepare a custom report of the findings and present you with a personalized training plan tailored to help you reach your goals. As part of this process we consult with other experts in the field and the application of this cutting-edge technology.

If we detect red flags that indicate a potential environmental toxin, or metabolic issues that could impact neurotransmitter balance and brain function, we may recommend at this point additional labs to confirm that your physiology is ready for brain training. We can refer you to functional health experts, or coach you along the Do-It-Yourself path.

Neuromodulation vs. neurofeedback

In advanced brain training we have to primary techniques, and they differ in how they train brain activity.

Neurofeedback reflects brain activity in real-time, fostering self-discovery and learning

Neuromodulation proactively introduces the brain to the desired pattern, facilitating adaptation and learning.

Neuromodulation

Neuromodulation, although less common than neurofeedback, is gaining attention for its faster and more efficient outcomes. We recommend this over neurofeedback in nearly every case. Here's why:

  1. Rapid Effects: Neuromodulation often produces noticeable improvements in cognitive function and mood after just a few sessions. This quick response instills confidence in the process.

  2. Fewer Sessions: Compared to neurofeedback, neuromodulation typically requires fewer sessions, often just around 10-20, to achieve lasting change. Neurofeedback may take twice as long or more.

  3. Enhanced Motivation: The rapid progress seen with neuromodulation keeps clients motivated and engaged in the treatment.

While both approaches have their strengths, neuromodulation's speed and efficiency make it an attractive choice for those seeking quicker results.

Neurofeedback

Neurostimulation is gaining attention for its speed and efficiency, yet Neurofeedback, with its extensive history, might be a better fit for certain cases. Neurofeedback offers several advantages, including:

  1. Self-Driven Change: Neurofeedback taps into the brain's inherent self-regulation, fostering natural and lasting changes.

  2. Non-Intrusive: Neurofeedback is non-invasive, eliminating the need for electrical currents or magnetic fields, minimizing potential side effects or discomfort.

Because neurofeedback requires a slow behavioral conditioning approach, time to results can be significantly greater than neuromodulation, leading to drop-outs from training.

If Neurofeedback is the right choice for your goals, we provide a range of modalities to suit your needs.

Re-assessment

After 10 training sessions we will re-map your brain, and perform another cognitive test. We expect this to show both and objective improvement in changes to the QEEG, and subjective improvement as you perform the cognitive test.

06

Integration

After an intensive training program of 10-20 sessions, we recommend some time off from training to integrate the changes. Once the brain is set in motion, it tends to continue changing and often the results continue to improve over the coming weeks and months.
